Aaaaand MTV continues to disappoint us…
The 2026 MTV VMAs have officially scrapped the Best Rock category, ending a run that dates all the way back to 1989, when it was originally called Best Heavy Metal Video. Over the years, the award has gone to legends like Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Korn, Linkin Park, Pearl Jam, Limp Bizkit and plenty more. Rock has already felt increasingly pushed to the side by MTV for years, so this feels like one more giant step toward the network completely forgetting why it was ever called Music Television in the first place.
And look, are we watching the VMAs anyway? Probably not. But seriously, MTV dropping its rock category after nearly four decades is pretty damn pathetic. The closest thing rock fans get this year is a Best Alternative category, whose nominees include mgk & Fred Durst, Tame Impala, twenty one pilots and Olivia Rodrigo. So… yeah.
