Did you feel that?!
People all over Middle Tennessee were left staring at the sky like what in the world was THAT?! late Monday night as mysterious booms and shakes rippled through the ground, only to find out it wasn’t an earthquake, a transformer explosion, or some secret military test… it was frost quakes… nature’s own “surprise ground pop” caused when water in soggy soil rapidly freezes, expands, and then violently cracks the earth with a booming crack that can rattle houses. All that recent rain from the winter storm soaked the ground, then a brutal temperature drop set the stage for this bizarre cracking spectacle across the Midstate.
And here’s the kicker: despite sounding like something out of a sci-fi horror flick, these frost quakes aren’t dangerous… just weirdly loud and totally unexpected. They’re basically like Mother Nature’s way of snapping her fingers and saying, “Surprise, y’all!” While they’re supposed to happen most winters, they’re still rare enough in Tennessee that most folks are still asking, “Wait… what was that boom?”
