Anchor Thieves- “The Weekend”
Anchor Thieves dropped not one but TWO brand new singles on Friday and both were all things Anchor Thieves in the best possible way. They’re one of those bands who have always played by their own rules and have always seemed to not care about the outside factors that can usually destroy bands, which honestly is probably why they’ve been together for over a decade. “The Weekend” takes my top spot for new songs this week and one listen through and you’ll understand why. Witch crunchy guitars, bends, heavy drums, a solid bass line, and those signature vocals, it’s already one of my favorite songs of 2021. Over the past 11 years, Anchor Thieves have truly created their own musical universe and we’re just lucky enough to catch a glimpse inside it from time to time.
Starflyer 59- “Life In Bed”
Starflyer 59 released “Life In Bed” on Friday and after weeks of teasing the song I absolutely had high hopes for this one. In true Starflyer 59 form, I was blown away immediately and I’ve had it on repeat ever since. Jason Martin’s voice and lyrics always hit hard in such a good way. There’s something both somber and beautiful at the same time in this song, and as with all his music, it takes you on a journey. A journey you may have not even known you needed until you’re on it. I hope this band comes to Nashville this year, Wish List alert.
Amy Darling- “Nasty Habits”
Amy Darling has always stuck out in the Nashville music scene in the best possible way. She never has been one to repeat herself and her latest single, “Nasty Habits” is a true testament to that. The song gives me vibes of the late 70s/early 80s in the sense of the time when artists could take chances and risks and grow in whatever direction they wanted to. I love seeing artists like Darling not being afraid to do whatever they want. Honestly with the way the industry is these days, being yourself is the bravest thing you can do, and Amy Darling is blazing the trail.
Ryan Adams- “Fuck The Rain”
Originally planned for a 2019 release, I was so stoked on “Big Colors” when “Fuck the Rain” came out 2 years ago. Then it was taken down and it was unknown what was to come of the record. On Friday, however, “Big Colors” was finally released and “Fuck The Rain” was on it. The song in which Adam’s sings about moving on past something painful in life has such a strong inspirational feeling to it and to me it’s always made me instantly happier when I hear it, so welcome back “Fuck the Rain” and welcome to the world “Big Colors”, it’s good to FINALLY meet you. 5 stars.
Renee Phoenix- “EZPZ”
Renee Phoenix dropped “EZPZ” on Friday and I immediately had to spin this one LOUD 6 times in a row. I love when bands are loud and unapologetically themselves and Phoenix is a true testament to that. The song kicks off with her signature raspy rock n roll voice and music that hits punches you right in the face in the best possible way. I often say the best thing in rock n roll you can be these days is to just be yourself and Renee Phoenix is the living embodiment of that. I can’t wait to see her live. Front row screaming along HERE I come.
