Jet Black Alley Cat- “Dangerously Cool”
As much as a bummer it is that Jet Black Alley Cat is going on a hiatus, the boys did us fans a solid by putting out one last EP for us to enjoy and already the pain stings a little less. I’ve been a fan of this band for years and they were regulars on my Sunday night show. I’ve seen them go from a young band fighting to make it to a band packing out Mercy Lounge to a full house of kids singing along and I’ve never been so proud. One thing I’ve always loved about this band is they have always unapologetically been themselves, even when the music world didn’t seem to “get it right away”. Eventually the rest of us caught up to what they are doing and the rest is Jet Black History. This is my favorite song of the EP and the name of the song is fitting because JBAC has always been cool to me in the sense that they were always just themselves, and ironically in music, that can sometimes be the most dangerous thing you can be. Love live Jet Black Alley Cat.
Ashland- “Misery”
Ashland has been one of my favorite bands for a few years now. I’m such a fan of the songs they put out and they are a frequent spin on my Sunday night show. They’re one of those bands that has a raw sound all their own but also have a pop sensibility that fits so well over the airwaves. They’re one of those bands that captures what it is to be cool just by being themselves, which is tough to do, and one of my favorite things about them. One thing about Ashland that always sticks with me is their undying love for what they do. This is a band who has had some ups and downs over the years with labels and I’ve always felt they are extremely underrated, but that has never slowed them down one bit. Their latest single, “Misery” brings us to 2021 and Ashland are back, and I am MORE than ready to hear what they have to say.
Tape Deck Mountain- “Nomo”
Tape Deck Mountain might very well be the coolest thing since The Dandy Warhols and I don’t usually make that comparison. I love the sound of this band. It’s a mix of Shoe Gaze with raw rock n roll but all wrapped up in something unique that you can’t quite put your finger on it but you wanna hear it again right away. Some bands play by their own rules and this band is 100% that band. Their songs are always way longer than radio rules allow, YET they still get spins on my show, no rules here. If their latest release, “Nomo”, is a sign of what’s to come from them this year, live shows need to come back immediately because I need to witness Tape Deck Mountain LIVE.
Slothrust- “Cranium”
There’s nothing cooler than a rock n roll 3 piece creating their own sound and few have done it as well as Slothrust. They are one of the most rad bands to come out in a long time and I’m always SO pumped when they release something new. Their latest single, “Cranium” is a true testament to a band following their own path and sticking to their guns to make it their way. I’ve always thought this band is underappreciated by the masses, but like most things as real and good as Slothrust, the world is finally catching up to where they’ve been this entire time. I for one am a Slothrust fan for life.
Rosemary- “Across The River”
Every once in a while a younger new band comes across my path that gives me a new found love of listening to music. Rosemary are one of those bands. They remind me of all the things I love about bands like Miracle Legion and Western Medication. Bands that made the music they wanted and for themselves, and given how young these dudes are I can only imagine what they’re gonna put out next and I am STOKED. “Across The River” is one of those songs that takes you on a journey when you listen to it and I suggest you take that journey with them right now.
