It’s Saturday night, it’s time to turn up the 5 songs I can’t stop listening to this week. Turn them up LOUD that is.
Bones Owens- “Blind Eyes”
I’ve always been a sucker for artist’s that tour as a 2 piece. There’s something so rad to me about band’s that can make a huge sound with so few people. Nashville’s own Bones Owens has been on my radar for a few years now and I am LOVING his latest single “Blind Eyes”. It reminds me of a mix between Butch Walker, Mazzy Star, mixed with a hint of Ryan Adams all made into his own Bones Owens sound. The song has a haunting vibe to it that sticks with you and if this is any hint of what’s to come on his self titled record due out in February, I think I may have already found my favorite record of 2021.
Smallpools- “Simulation”
Smallpools have truly created the ultimate anthem for the year 2020 with their latest single “Simulation”. A band known for a busy touring schedule and an explosive live show, you’d think being off the road and held up in the studio all year would cause them to lose some steam, but the band hasn’t even skipped a beat. I’m a massive fan of this band and this song has been stuck in my head all weekend long. When I first heard the lyrics I wondered if this songs was in fact about 2020 and after some research online it seems to be confirmed. To be honest I don’t know if anyone could describe this year more perfect than the unique sound that is Smallpools and if this is any sign of what’s to come from their new record due out next year, watch out 2021, because Smallpools are about to take over the radio.
Vera Bloom- “Love Like Knives”
Nashville’s own Vera Bloom released her second single, “Love Like Knives” on Friday and it’s everything I hoped for and more. I was a massive fan of her first single, “Breathe” and now her latest shows a different side of her music but stays true to the sound that hooked us in the first place. Her sound reminds me of all the things I love about artists like Poe, Veruca Salt, and Best Coast but all wrapped into the sound that is Vera Bloom. There’s an honesty and raw-ness in her music that’s hard to ignore and if “Love Like Knives” is any sign of what’s to come, 2021 is gonna be a massive year for her.
Travis- “Nina’s Song”
Travis has been one of my favorite bands for well over 20 years now, which is crazy to say out loud now that I read this. At this point in a band’s career, it can be tough to stay true to the songwriting and sound that the band is known for, but that has never been the case for Travis. Their latest single, “Nina’s Song”, instantly reminds me of why I love this band. Amazing songwriting that transcends decades and musical trends. I’m at an age where a lot of my favorite bands are no longer together, or they have lost their way and just tour to play the hits. Travis, however, is putting out music as good as they did when I first heard them 20 years ago and “Nina’s Song” is truly a testament to how a good song can take you away in the moment.
The Dead Deads featuring Julia Lauren of The Foxies- “Hey Girlfriend”
Nashville’s own The Dead Deads have never ceased to amaze me. I feel like every time they put something out, I’m always thinking to myself, HOW is each song cooler than the last. Normally known for a busy touring schedule, this past year has given the band a lot of time in the studio and it’s been great seeing the songs coming out of their time here in town. Their latest single, “Hey Girlfriend” has all the attitude and honesty we’ve come to know and love about the band and has a catchy hook to bring us back in once again. It also feature Julia Lauren of The Foxies, another one of my favorite Nashville bands, lending her vocals to the song. Now if only 2021 can be more normal so we can see The Dead Deads and The Foxies tour together. That’s on my Christmas wish list for sure.
