My weekly playlist of 5 songs that have been rocking my weekend. Turn them up and rock along with me.
Jet Black Alley Cat- “All Out Of Luck”
Once upon a time when I could have bands in the studio, one of my favorites were always Jet Black Alley Cat. They were always a fun hang and 100% real. I remember someone once asked me “are those dudes really the way they seem? Or is it an act?” and I responded “these dudes are 100% themselves and that automatically makes the coolest dudes in the room”. This band isn’t afraid to make music on their own terms and judging by the shows selling out last year in town and constant touring, it seems the rest of the world is finally catching up to what Jet Black Alley Cat are doing.
CAVO- “Muscle Memory”
Me and the CAVO boys set out doing some demos a few years ago and initially scrapped this song as well as a few others. Finally earlier this year we decided we wanted to breathe new life into it so we decided to record a new version of it and release a video to go with. One thing we’ve always done is try and make music on our own terms, this song is no exception to that rule. Someone told me they said we look like we’re having fun these days, and to be honest this is the most fun version of CAVO to date. No rules, just music. The way we want it.
Anchor Thieves- “Cyclopede”
By far one of my favorite bands based in Nashville. These dudes never follow any rules but their own. The thing I love about them is every time I see they’ve put a new song out, I NEVER know what it’s going to sound like, but I always know I’m going to love it. Boundaries are meant to be pushed in rock n roll, and these boys push it to the wall. In 2020, the industry needs to pay more attention to band’s that have a solid catalog and aren’t afraid to grow like Anchor Thieves.
Rubyhorse featuring George Harrison- “Punchdrunk”
I feel extremely fortunate that I was able to see this band live many times in the early 2000s. I first saw them open for Flickerstick in St.Louis, MO and I would travel to see them a few times after that. They quickly became one of my favorite bands in college and I always felt like they should’ve been bigger. They recently re-released one of my favorite songs of theirs and I still think it’s rad they can say they had the late great George Harrison play on one of their songs all these years later. Welcome back boys! Please come back to the states soon.
The Tragically Hip- “My Music @ Work”
Not a new song by any means, but I couldn’t let the day pass without adding my favorite Tragically Hip song. Lead singer, Gord Downie passed away 3 years ago today. Growing up in St.Louis, I randomly had MuchMusic, so none of the bands I wrote on my binder in highschool were really known to my classmates and I remember feeling like I had this entire secret world with all these great bands, none of my friends new about. I was kinda a nerd in school and bands like The Hip made me feel like I had all the friends I needed. I still crank this song on the way to work all the time. RIP Gord, we miss you down here.
