With the plans for autonomous cars, humans may be the biggest roadblock…
I found an interesting article awhile back talking about how one of the biggest challenges the new “robot cars” will face, is human drivers. Here recently at the AutoConference in California, Dietmar Exler, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA brought the issue up to the forefront of discussion during a speech he was giving. So now people are wondering, what will be the next step?
The issue… Road Bullies.
Yeah… basically humans will bully the robot cars with their aggressive driving. See, the autonomous cars are programmed to avoid risk and dangerous scenarios. They are programmed to be passive, they are programmed to follow the laws. Humans… well, we know how we drive!
If the autonomous cars were programmed to be more aggressive and take some “chances”, then they might fit in a little better. But, most have doubts that regulators would ever allow that to happen.
There are some interesting studies based around all this and human nature… interesting read for the inner-geek.
