Kirk Hammett accidentally wandered into one of the internet’s most dangerous neighborhoods this week: Taylor Swift discourse.
The Metallica guitarist showed up to a show wearing a shirt that read “Taylor Swift Is a CIA Psyop,” which immediately sent portions of the internet into DEFCON 1. Swifties flooded social media with criticism, while others pointed out that it was pretty obviously a joke shirt poking fun at conspiracy theories. Either way, congratulations to Kirk for somehow starting a culture war with a t-shirt.
This may be the most predictable outcome in internet history. You put “Taylor Swift,” “Metallica,” and “social media” in the same sentence and somehow expect everyone to remain calm? Not a chance. What followed was exactly what you’d expect: arguments, outrage, memes, think pieces, and approximately 47,000 people suddenly becoming experts on Kirk Hammett’s wardrobe choices. The internet remains undefeated.
