A brutal winter storm has basically flipped the lights off across huge swaths of Middle Tennessee, leaving tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of residents in the cold and dark. Freezing rain and ice built up overnight, snapping tree limbs and power lines and causing massive outages, especially around Nashville.
According to WKRN, Nashville Electric Service (NES) reported well over 170,000 customers without power by Sunday morning, and other updates suggest that number may have swelled to more than 250,000 people without electricity across the region as the storm rolled on. Officials warn that the damage is so widespread that restoration could take days, and crews are working around the clock to trudge through icy conditions and get things back online.
The storm isn’t just a minor inconvenience, either… roads are slick and treacherous, trees are down everywhere, and responders are telling folks to stay off the roads unless it’s serious. Utilities have crews out in force, but icy weather makes repairs slow and dangerous, and some neighborhoods might be in the dark longer than others. Emergency management agencies are setting up warming centers and urging people to layer up and stay safe while they wait.
A massive thanks to the crew working nonstop trying to get the lights back on!!
