Recently, it was revealed that Metallica’s new album will be called “72 Seasons.” It’s their first full length recording since 2016.
Here are the facts we know so far about the upcoming Thrash/Metal release.
“…Will 72 Seasons be the heaviest Metallica record yet? While he didn’t say quite that, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich did describe the album as “the heaviest thing” while they were working on it in 2020.
“It’s the heaviest thing, the coolest,” Ulrich told Classic Rock magazine of what would become 72 Seasons.
“But all kidding aside,” he continued, “if it wasn’t because we thought that the best record was still ahead of us, then why keep doing it? … In Metallica we love the creative process, and it’s hard for me to imagine that we’ll ever stop.”
The 72 Seasons of Metallica refer to the first 18 years of a person’s life, according to Metallica singer-guitarist James Hetfield. There’s four seasons in a year, so 4 × 18 = 72.
“Is there a special meaning to the title?” the singer said in a press release when the album was announced. “72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are.”
