BUSH’s much anticipated new album The Art Of Survival drops October 7th and judging by the singles the band has been releasing weekly leading up to it, I cant WAIT to hear the entire record. If you listen to my show or read this blog, it’s no surprise to you I grew up in the era of CDS. In my day you’d go buy your fav band’s new CD and you’d head home and put the thing on and listen to it front to back. Not to just hear the hits you’d be rocking on the radio to, but for me it was always about finding those tracks on the album that weren’t going to be the big radio hits, but would become your favorite song off the record. They used to call them “B-sides” or simply “later in the cycle singles”, but somehow those songs always became my favorite songs and I would always hope to hear them live and to this day those are the songs off my favorite records I usually turn up while I’m driving around.
When I think back to those days and records like that, few did it better then BUSH. They always had records that had it all, radio hits and then those deeper cuts I’m referring to. A few examples for me would be the first time I heard “Bone Driven”, “Cold Contagious” or “Inflatable”. 3 songs you probably wouldn’t hear live at a BUSH show these days, but to me those are 3 essential BUSH songs in the sense that they really showcased the depth of their songwriting and the overall realness of such a larger then life band.
Their latest single, “Heavy Is The Ocean”, see BUSH continuing the tradition of a slower rock song that hits harder then even some of their heaviest stuff. A great song that the second I heard it, took me back to that feeling of finding one of those special moments on a BUSH record. Somehow Gavin Rossdale has always been able to say so much with saying so little and to me this song is a reminder of his ability to do just that. I can’t wait to hear this full record and see them live again, and hopefully hear this one live because it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite BUSH songs. Well done Gavin and the boys, WELL done. Now do yourself a favor and go turn this one up NOW.
