I’ve made the statement many of times on my radio show, “Always go to the show”, in reference to shows I could have seen in my youth but chose not to go and thus now regretting it later in life. For instance I passed on seeing The Killers in a small club in 2002 and it’s something that’s bums me out to this day. Now not to say every single show is going to be amazing or that you’ll discover the next big thing, BUT, you’ll never know if you decide not to go. Last night was one of those shows for me for sure that I’m thankful I was at. I’ve wanted to see … And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead for well over 20 years and for some reason just never had. When I heard they were playing The East Room, I knew THIS was my chance to see them at such a cool intimate club. Of course after a summer of traveling and doing rock show after rock show, I’ve found myself a little rocked out lately, but last night I stopped yawning like a middle aged dude and went to The East Room to see a show I had been waiting for for 2 decades. When I walked in a band I’d never heard before were on stage called New Candys. I normally walk straight to the bar at shows and get a drink but the second I saw and heard these dudes I forgot all about the drink and stood there blown away. They have a really rad sound that to me that gives me vibes of Kreeps meets Dandy Warhols(who they recently toured with so my jealousy of this band is growing by the day), and early Flock Of Seagulls(the guitar playing alone rivals all my favorite FOE songs). To say I’m a jaded dude would be quite the understatement, honestly my headstone should read “Here Lies Andy Jaded Herrin”, but New Candys revived my faith in the next generation of bands doing their own thing, their way, and on their own terms. They have great songs, a great sound, and they’re on stage just being themselves and you can take it or leave it. They held their own opening for the legends Trail of the Dead amazingly and honestly it was the best night of live rock n roll I’ve had in years thanks to both bands. New Candys are one of my new favorite bands and a band you should watch for, 2022 is the year of New Candys and I will die on this hill. Now do yourself a massive favor and turn this one up NOW.
