My Saturday night list of the songs that have been rocking my weekend. Turn them up and rock along with me, LOUD.
Val Hoyt- “Over It”
I first became aware of Val Hoyt when he was rocking and rolling in his former band Hardcastle and I was instantly a fan. Now solo, Hoyt, released a surprise record last week and announced via his Instagram an album release show to coincide with it. The album, entitled “Muscle Spasms” is a stripped down record far away from his former band that shows Hoyt growing and coming into his own as an artist. I was immediately taken back by not only the catchy melodies on the record, but the heaviness of the lyrics that you would expect from a man twice his age to be honest. If this is where Hoyt is at 22, I can’t wait to see where he goes from here. 2021 is the year of Val Hoyt and I will die on this hill.
Bre Kennedy- “Control”
Bre Kennedy has been one of my favorite artists to come out of Nashville for a few years now. I’ve always dug her sound and the way you never know which direction her music is going to go. Her latest single, “Control”, is a true testament to her continuing to do exactly what she wants to do. The music video is rad and shows Kennedy shackled in ropes as she tries to break free and perform which is a great metaphor to how the music industry feels sometimes. However I feel like in real life, Kennedy would actively cut those ropes because she’s always played by no one else’s rules but her own, and that’s one thing I’ve always loved about her. Turn this one up loud.
Angels and Airwaves- “Restless Souls”
Angels and Airwaves returned with their latest single, “Restless Souls” on Friday and already 2021 is better for it. I love how Tom Delonge has always blazed this band’s path in his own way. A lot of people compare it to Blink and other things he’s been a part of, but I’ve always loved how with Angels, they’ve just done their own thing and made their own musical movement. This latest single continues the trajectory of a band making their own universe and we’re just lucky enough to live in it.
Through The Motions- “Medicine”
One of the newest bands to come outta Nashville, Through The Motions, released a RAD new song called “Medicine” and it’s already one of my fav songs of 2021. I love how the heavy drums kick in and the song takes off from there with an explosive chorus. I never wanna jinx any new bands, BUT, I see big things for these boys and I will stand by that. Turn this one up LOUD.
Anchor Thieves- “Effigy”
The Anchor Thieves have returned with 2 brand new singles, one I featured last week and so I HAD to feature this one as well. “Effigy” continues the trend of the Thieves exploring their sounds together in a way that only the Anchor Thieves can do. I love the way they play together and this song is a true display of their songwriting strength. Once upon a time I was on a plane that looked like it was going down, so I put on an Anchor Thieves song to calm me down and go down with. I would still do that if it were to happen today, only difference is now I’d turn on this song, “Effigy”.
