My weekly call to action for you to turn up the songs I can’t stop listening to this week. Turn them up, LOUD.
DeeOhGee- “New Way Of Life”
Formerly known as The Blackfoot Gypsies, DeeOhGee were the first band I ever saw live when I first moved to Nashville nearly a decade ago. I’ll never forget randomly seeing them play at a small bar in town and the dude next to me, who was ROCKING OUT, looked at me and said “These guys have IT” After seeing them live that night, and many more times for years after, I have to say that gentleman who was rocking out was 100% correct. The band was the last band I had on my radio show before 2020 shut everything down and they were pulled off the road. Their latest single “New Way Of Life” is a true testament to a band finding themselves in just that. After all the years of touring and writing amazing records, DeeOhGee are embracing the new life they find themselves in and I’m thankful we get to go along for the ride.
Chevelle- “Self destructor”
Chevelle dropped “Self destructor” yesterday and 2021 is automatically looking up. Chevelle is one of those bands that created a sound all their own and they’ve always stayed true to it, all the while evolving and growing along the way. You can always spot the signature Chevelle sound right away in their music and I think that’s one of the biggest compliments a band can get in an age where so many bands attempt to ride waves and jump on trends to stay relevant. I remember Gord Downie from The Tragically Hip once said “Avoid trends and clichés, don’t try to be up to date” and Chevelle lives that. Their latest single has the honesty and sound of a band growing and getting stronger while staying true to themselves, and THAT is what rock n roll is all about.
Reece Young- “All In My Head”
Reece Young dropped “All In My Head” this week and it’s been in my head ever since. Dude can WRITE a song. Young lives in Nashville and honestly he’s everything I love about living in “music city”, an artist paving his own way, on his own terms, and people are nationally taking notice. When I listen to “All In My Head” it makes me long for live music to make a return so I can be front row at his show singing along, I normally stand in the back by the bar, BUT this song will have me front row. That’s for damn sure.
Conventional Wisdom- “Shadow”
I saw Conventional Wisdom back in 2019 and I remember standing there with my mouth open the entire show. The band has such a powerful sound. A wall of music cut through by haunting vocals with lyrics that cut just as deep. “Shadow” is by far my favorite song off their Elemental EP. The song is the sound of a band controlling chaos to me if that makes sense. The song has peaks and valleys and every time you think you know where the song is going, they take it to an even cooler place. It reminds me of how it felt when records took you on journeys, and I’ll gladly follow Conventional Wisdom into the chaos any time.
Tigers Jaw- “Hesitation”
Tigers Jaw dropped “Hesitation” Friday and it instantly became my favorite song of 2021 so far. The band has always had a gravity that pulls one in the second you hear them. They remind me of everything I love about The Dandy Warhols, Miracle Legion, and The Lawrence Arms all wrapped into their own sound I can’t get enough of. “Hesitation” has a raw honesty musically that I feel the world needs more of these days. There’s an old saying that says “the song is boss”, and in this case that boss is Tigers Jaw. 2021 is the year of Tigers Jaw and I will die on this hill.
