Tis the season to impress your friends with rocking Christmas tunes. It’s a common belief that Christmas songs are lame but here are 5 Christmas songs that say otherwise.
Material Issue- “Merry Christmas Will Do”
A Christmas classic from 1991. I’ve always been a massive fan of sad Christmas songs and this one tops the sad chart but it’s disguised in a catchy rock tune. The chorus “You don’t have to say you love me, I know that that’s not true. Merry Christmas will do” may be the most sad lyrics for the holiday season ever, but with that said it still always puts me in the holiday mood. Long live Material Issue.
Great American Canyon Band- “This Christmas”
There’s something about Christmas that makes you long for something. Sometimes it’s a person, place, or even a certain time (maybe Christmas past?). I always love the idea of a sad Christmas song about longing for something and this song hits on that hard. I love the overall message though, we can still be together somehow. Christmas does only come one day a year afterall, we shall find a way.
Beach Slang- “Fa La Blah Blah Blah”
Beach Slang surprised us with a RAD new Christmas song a few days ago. I’m such a fan of this band. They have everything Gin Blossoms, The Replacements, early Goo Goo Dolls, and Superdrag all wrapped into their very own sound. The chorus “I want beer” comes off as funny but there’s always such an honesty in James’ voice. I believe every single word that dude says. Can live shows please come back? I wanna hear him scream this one out loud n clear for a packed house.
The Dead Deads- “Santa Beamed Us Up”
This Christmas song goes down as one of the most unique ones to date. The idea that Santa could be an alien could only come from The Dead Deads. This band has always blazed their own path and thought for themselves so it’s honestly no surprise they’d come up with such a cool and unique Christmas song. Wasn’t it proven aliens are real this year? In that case… maybe this is a true story all along..
DeeOhGee- “SantaClaus Is Dead”
Formerly known as Blackfoot Gypsies, the boys have changed their named to DeeOhGee and I LOVE that their first single is a dark Christmas song. This band has always had such a rock n roll sound hands down with a hint of humor, but always realness when Matthew opens his mouth. This is a great song to turn up for that after dinner drink, after you put the kids to sleep of course.
