My Saturday night ritual of letting you take a peek at what songs have been rocking my weekend playlist. Turn these up and rock along with me, LOUD.
The Lees of Memory- “Grave Mistake”
After The Lees of Memory already gave us arguably the best record of 2020, “Moonshot”, the band surprised us all with a 2 song single release on Black Friday. This band never ceases to amaze me. The musicianship, the lyrics, the drums, the vocals, and the meaning and passion in the music always hits me and reminds me why this band is so great. The band has never really been put in one box musically and even if you try to put them into one, they’ll just bust right out of it. The split single “Stay Freee”/”Grave Mistake” sounds like they would’ve fit well on any of the Lees records, they just have a sound all their own, and it’s only a matter of time before newer band’s start to mimic it. The Lees of Memory are the type of band that when you hear them, you wanna go home and practice to someday be that good. So here I sit, at my drums, practicing.
Beach Riot- “Blush”
Beach Riot are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. I remember first hearing about them in 2017 and I’ve loved watching them grow and keep putting out amazing records. Their latest single, “Blush”, reminds me of the first time I heard bands like Idlewild and Creeper Lagoon. A time in music when you could have a rock n roll live show with all the attitude and rock but the songs stood so strong you’d leave singing them days after. I’m not sure what will happen in 2021, but a Beach Riot show in Nashville is 100% on my Christmas wish list this year. This band is gonna blow up in the states next year, that’s my stance and I will die on this hill.
The Sacred- “All Right”
2020 is a strange year to introduce a relatively new band to the world. To be honest, I’ve personally seen a lot of newer bands lose steam this year with the music industry seeming to be at a standstill in a lot of ways. The Sacred, however, seem to just be gaining steam and pushing ahead with no stop in sight. I love the band’s sound. It’s the sound of controlled chaos, reminiscent of At The Drive In or Sparta. A band of pro musicians creating this true rock n roll sound live with an accuracy and passion behind it. Their latest single, “All Right” is a testament to that. You can feel the hunger in this band, and that’s a refreshing and welcome thing in 2020.
The Nearly Deads- “Can’t Make You Change”
The Nearly Deads return with a RAD new single, Can’t Make You Change” and it’s exactly what I needed this week. This band has always blown me away by their dedication to making the exact music they wanna make, and their dedicated fans have always been and continue to be a testament to that. Their one of those bands that when I listen to their music, I can visually see them playing live in my mind. I’m hoping 2021 brings The Nearly Deads back to Nashville because I can’t wait to sing this song front row at a packed house like the good old days.
Great American Canyon Band- “Broken Glass”
I’ll never forget the first time I heard Great American Canyon Band and if you’ve heard of them I’m sure you won’t either. They create this unique wall of sound I just wanna get lost in. The vocals of Paul and Kris Masson together is a sound all it’s own and the guitars and drums just round out everything perfectly. There’s always been a punk rock vibe to this band with a smooth edge to it. A band that is unapologetically itself. Someone once told me Great American Canyon Band’s music sounds “far away and nearby at the same time” and I have to agree with that statement. The music takes you on a journey away but the lyrics take you deep inside yourself and I for one am thankful for both trips.
