Burak Cingi/Redferns2020 was supposed to be the year of Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl and company planned to celebrate their 25th anniversary with a new album, a tour, and a giant Fourth of July stadium show.
Of course, 2020 has become the year of COVID-19, which, as Grohl tells Entertainment Weekly, put a hold on the year of Foo.
“We put about a year’s worth of work into this year — meaning we started preparing multiple projects all to release now,” Grohl explains. “There was a documentary, there was another secret project that we were so excited about, there was a tour, there’s a new album, we made a video.”
While those things are all on hold, Grohl says that the band currently has an “arsenal of material ready to…dam-burst all over the world.”
“It’s just a matter of figuring out when the world is ready because I think that’s a little more important than the Foo Fighters,” he laughs.
Grohl also admits that, towards the beginning of the quarantine, he didn’t find any comfort in his own music.
“For the first four weeks of this quarantine, I didn’t even have a guitar, I didn’t want to touch a guitar,” he says. “I was so focused on the family and the country and the world and the news that I just kind of backed out of music. And slowly I’m starting to fool around with things again.”
Grohl has been mostly focused on writing as a creative outlet, between his Dave’s True Stories Instagram page and a recent piece on the importance of live music for The Atlantic.
“Right now the most important thing to me is that people find a little bit of hope and joy in life instead of just going down like a dark spiral,” he says.
