The reunited “Helena” rockers are selling MCR-branded face masks, and donating all proceeds to the MusiCares COVID-19 relief fund.
Eerily, the idea for a My Chem face mask predated the coronavirus crisis — it was originally conceived as a desert screening device by the band’s late manager, Lauren Valencia, who died last summer of cancer.
“We are living in strange times, alienating times, scary times,” MCR says. “These masks were the brainchild of our beloved Lauren Valencia, who died before this madness, not of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the older evil that is cancer.”
“We had these masks made to keep you dust-free in the desert, a show that never happened, never will, a protection that then seemed timeworn,” the band continues. “And here we are, with these masks, as though Lauren was prescient or we were unknowingly waiting for the right time.”
The description of the mask also notes that it is not an official N95 mask, nor is it anti-microbial. The CDC offers guidelines regarding how to properly use fabric face masks.

Meanwhile, My Chemical Romance is scheduled to launch a U.S. reunion tour this fall. They’ve already postponed a number of international dates due to the pandemic.
