Hi, if you’re reading this, you’re either intrigued or you need this information. If it’s the latter, I want you to know that there are other foods out there, like, a lot of other foods, and you don’t have to resort to this. Talk to someone.
Now that I’ve said that, ‘experts’ (or just anyone with common sense, really) are warning against eating… CICADAS!!!
David Shetlar, who is a professor emeritus of entomology with Ohio State University Extension, had this to say:
“These things are perfectly edible,” Shetlar said, later adding: “While there is little risk of any dangerous pathogens or parasites to be found in cicadas, there is always the slim risk of picking up something that you certainly don’t want to get by eating the cicadas raw. Simply fry them in a pan with some butter, or toss in a little bacon or bacon fat for added flavor.”
Shortly after Shetlar spoke, he was attacked by a million red-eyed tiny demons (cicadas). Thankfully, the government took over as the ‘experts’ with a warning of their own. From the FDA:
“Don’t eat #cicadas if you’re allergic to seafood as these insects share a family relation to shrimp and lobsters.” Guess this means I’ll never eat shrimp and lobster again. Fare thee well, Outback Steakhouse.
