The track, which opens with the line “The day my f***ing mom abandoned me,” currently sits on the top 20 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart. As Jones tells ABC Audio, “Take Me Away” is the rising Seattle rocker’s origin story about his “humble beginnings.”
“[‘Take Me Away’ is] the true story of what it meant to have to struggle with not only just your identity, but the emotions of being abandoned and the emotions of dealing with being a child growing up in the ’90s and the ’80s, and dealing with repercussions of the war on drugs,” Jones explains.
Jones feels that the story of “Take Me Away” is an “important” one to tell, and also one that’s way too common.
“I grew up with a lot of people who had that same exact thing,” Jones says. “They grew up with their grandmas or their aunties or someone who wasn’t their parents and they rarely got to see their parents, and their experience growing up was not the ‘American dream’ that we’re all told that we’re supposed to expect in our life.”
Still, Jones didn’t have any expectations of significant airplay when he wrote “Take Me Away.” After all, he does drop the F-word in the first line, but he does so with deliberate intention.
“There’s no more American word, I think, than the F-bomb,” Jones laughs.
“To use it in the way that I have, I deliberately put it [in the song],” he says. “When I finally settled on the way I wanted it to sound, the F-bomb was really the only way I could express that.”
