The punk trio’s latest single, a Joan Jett-sampling cut from their new album Father of All…, has reached the top of Billboard‘s Alternative Songs chart. Why is that historic? Because it sets a new record for the longest span between number-ones on the ranking.
Green Day first scored a number-one on Alternative Songs in June 1994 with “Longview,” a total of 25 years, 10 months and one week ago. That bests the previous record, which was set by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their first and most recent Alternative Songs number-ones — “Give It Away” and “Dark Necessities,” respectively — are separated by 24 years, nine months and two weeks.
Additionally, “Oh Yeah!”‘s ascension puts Green Day just one song behind RHCP for the most number-one singles in the history of the Alternative Songs chart, which began in 1988. Billie Joe Armstrongand company now have 12 number-ones, while the Peppers have 13.
“Oh Yeah!” previously hit number one on Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock Songs chart, and hase spent the last two weeks leading the Rock Airplay tally. That later achievement ties Green Day with Foo Fightersfor the most number-one Rock Airplay hits.
