I had a question pop into my head the other day as I was pulling into the Buzz parking lot. I realized, that I always, pretty much back into my parking space. I also notice that Dagwood and Zigz like back it up. So, my question is; what is the mind set of those who like to back into parking spaces versus those who just like to pull straight in. I went to the interwebs and found an interview with NPR’s Social Science correspondent Shankar Vedantam. He brought the “Marshmallow test.” Basically, you bring a kid in a room, by themselves and you offer the kid a marshmallow, but before you leave, you tell the kid that if they can wait 5 minutes to eat the marshmallow, they will get TWO marshmallows. The experiment shows that the kids who could wait for the full 5 mins had better educational outcomes, they had more successful careers years and years down the road. The long of the short of the test is that you delay gratification – to do the hard thing first to get the payoff later. People who tend to back up into parking spaces, are people who work harder and are willing to put in more effort instead of just whipping it in a spot…..and that can also have impact on a persons and or a countries “economic drive.” Read on at the link also about why people in certain countries tend to back it up, and it’s also a thing in Hawaii!
