Do you guys remember a movie called PCU? It poked fun at political correctness and how it would play out on a college campus. Little did we know, it was apparently predicting the future of actual college campuses. Kind of like that movie Idiocracy did for America in general… oh, we’re getting there…
A college in Vermont announced this week that it will stop selling energy drinks on campus. The reasoning behind this? It comes from an intern who works in the college’s Dining Services. The student argued that energy drinks promote a “culture of stress” and bad habits… both academically and apparently in life.
When explaining the decision, college officials even went on to say the drinks have been linked to unsafe behavior like alcohol abuse and “high-risk sexual activity.”
Now the reason this bugs me… at what point does ‘personal responsibility” come into play? I mean, the drink isn’t the reason people do things. If that is the logic, then why don’t we ban aluminum cans? They obviously contain the drink that is causing the issues, so if you get rid of the can then that might help, right? Better yet… let’s ban shoes. I mean, people are using them to walk to different places which leads to questionable behavior. Oh I know… let’s just ban breathing… because if you’re dead then nothing bad can happen.
Now if this was just a “health” issue, I could see how they would maybe make the argument not to sell the drinks. But, then how do you say an energy drink is bad but fried foods and sugar filled foods are ok? At the end of the day, it still boils down to the CHOICES that different people make.
Will it ever end, or will it only get worse?
