According to a 2025 survey from the American Pet Products Association, dogs are living it up in about 68 million U.S. households. But let’s be real, what kind of dog you see around totally depends on where you are.
U.S. News & World Report dove into over 1.2 million data points (yeah, they went all in) from January 2022 to July 2025 to figure out which dog breeds are running the show, both nationwide and in the 25 biggest cities in the country.
Here’s the rundown of the 10 most common breeds across the board:
- Labrador Retriever
- Chihuahua
- Golden Retriever
- American Pit Bull Terrier
- German Shepherd
- French Bulldog
- Goldendoodle
- Shih Tzu
- Yorkshire Terrier
- Dachshund
BUT, when you’re in Nashville, the top breeds are:
- Labrador retriever
- Golden retriever
- Goldendoodle
