How did your professor know you used ChatGPT? A study from the University of East Anglia found an obvious tell: ChatGPT doesn’t try to engage readers the way human writers do. AI can produce grammatically correct texts, but fails to create engaging writing. This could explain why some professors can tell when students use generative AI. Human beings tend to use “engagement markers” to help the reader feel like they’re being spoken to directly. This includes use of questions, personal stories, and reader mentions. “The AI essays mimicked academic writing conventions, but they were unable to inject text with a personal touch or to demonstrate a clear stance,” co-author Ken Hyland said.
