I remember first meeting Coco from Winona Fighter a few years back at one of the Ivins Bro’s Grunge Nights here in Nashville. I played drums and she was on vocals for Hole’s “Malibu”. I remember at the time thinking WHO is this girl who is killing it right now? Those shows are wild in the sense that you often don’t even really meet who you perform with, you just go up to a packed house and rock with total strangers and it somehow feels just perfect and chaotic all at the same time. Coco and I became friends and performed at a few more tribute night things like that over time and I was always a fan of her solo stuff, but when I saw the post last year her band was officially called Winona Fighter, I was STOKED. I was also secretly angry I hadn’t thought of that band name first, but mostly I was stoked for them. I saw them shortly after at The High Watt (RIP) and it was by far one of my favorite shows I’ve seen in years. The energy, humor, musicianship, stage presence, songs, and everything in between blew me away.
Now a little over a year later the band has toured the country with huge acts, landed a solid management team, and has a RAD new single out called “Hamms In A Glass” that is setting the stage for what Winona Fighter is about to do. I for one am grateful I saw them play at The High Watt in 2022, because some day soon that’ll be the show the world wishes they could’ve all seen. Now do yourself a favor and go turn this one up NOW.
