I remember meeting Bryan Cates a few years back and hearing what a great songwriter he was. It wasn’t just one person telling me this, it was multiple people. Shortly after a few members of Band Or Horses (whom I am a massive fan) told me the same. At this point I knew I had to check him out. Luckily for me, he was opening for my own band at Cobra a few weeks later and I got to see him and finally realize what so many already knew. This guy was the real deal and I was immediately a fan.
We live in an era of high production songs and rewarding musicians for riding trends. Something I’ve never understood nor will I ever try to. One of my favorite things about Cates is how he ignores all outside influences when it comes to his music. He doesn’t feel the need to over produce anything or to try and sound like anyone else but himself. True art and true rock n roll is doing exactly what you wanna do at all times, and few do that better than Cates. His latest record, “Any Way You Are” is a true testament to the power of a good song. The title track has been stuck in my head since it came out Friday and I suggest you get ready to feel the exact same way. Trust me, we are both better for it. To be honest, this is Bryan Cate’s world, we are just lucky enough to live along side him in it. Now do yourself a favor and go turn this one up NOW.
