A few years back I was playing some shows down in Austin for SXSW, the fun but often exhausting music festival, when I randomly stumbled into a bar to see a band that would become one of my favorite bands ever. We had a night off from playing shows and my then manager suggested we walk down to the “red gorilla” shows just to see what was going on at that sister festival that pops up every year at the same time. I do remember thinking a lot of those shows were a lot less “safe” then the industry influenced SXSW shows.
I’ll never forget walking into this bar and the lights were low, the crowd was going crazy, and this band was on stage absolutely killing it. We Are Band Nerds was the name of the band and I’ve been following them closely ever since. This band is the real deal, so much so I remember my manager wanting to sign them and he was at a very well known agency. He introduced himself to the singer of the band and even said what agency he was with, and the singer looked at him confused and said “cool thanks.”. I knew then that this band was going to blaze their own trail and they have ever since. Its refreshing to see a band not let the business ruin the music, and if more bands did that the music industry would be much better off for it these days. They released “Say Less” on Friday and I suggest you do yourself a favor and turn this one up NOW.
