David Cook- “Red Turns Blue”
Recently I had the honor of going out and playing drums for David Cook, and like most gigs you take a fill in spot for, you may not always know what to expect. I remember van touring in the early days and always hearing his hits all over the radio back then so I was pumped to play those songs for sure. When I was sent his latest release, I was immediately floored by the sound and strength of the songs on it. “Red Turns Blue” was a standout immediately and I couldn’t wait to rock it. I actually added it to my radio show, for one because it’s one of my new favorite songs, but also because I had to learn it so what better way to study right? Check out the rad video for it below and make sure you’ve got this one set to LOUD.
Flight Attendant- “Magic Carpet Ride”
I really can’t say it enough but it’s Flight Attendant’s world, we are just lucky enough to get to live in it. Their latest single, a RAD cover of “Magic Carpet Ride” takes the classic tune to a whole other level only Flight Attendant could take it to. There’s something so unique about this band and their sound is undeniably them. It’s ironic to me this is a cover of a song about taking a magic carpet ride because their version of it will take you on just that.
Flickerstick- “Beautiful”
20 years ago one of my all time favorite records came out. “Welcoming Home The Astronauts” by Flickerstick hit record store shelves and the band was on top of the world. I saw them twice on the tour for it and to this day those shows rank high among the greatest live shows I’ve ever seen. Recently the band got the rights back to release the album finally to streaming services and I’ve loved listening to this album again. A lot of people often say Flickerstick should’ve been way bigger as a band, and I agree I think they’re criminally underrated, however this band is not one that’s lost on “what could have been”. To me this record is timeless and the fact it’s taking so many people on the same journey today as it did back then, is worth more than all the commercial success in the world.
Matt Pond PA featuring Matthew Caws- “Spaceland”
Two of my favorite artists teamed up and once I stood up off the floor after fainting, I couldn’t wait to give it a listen. Matt Pond PA and Matthew Caws together is the collab we all didn’t even know we needed but already 2021 is far better for it. The songwriting strength of these two dudes together along with their vocals makes “Spaceland” a song that you’ll wanna put on repeat. There’s something about Matt Pond PA and Nada Surf that has always represented honesty to me, just a band playing and singing the way they want to, so together like this I’m just gonna say this song is the TRUTH.
The Criticals- “Izzy”
One of my favorite bands to come out of Nashville, The Criticals, dropped a RAD new tune called “Izzy” and I already think 2022 is going to be the year of this band. They have such an essence to them when they’re live and on their records. A band who is here to take no prisoners but isn’t going to play along by anyone’s rules but their own. I wish more bands would be like The Criticals, but then again maybe that would ruin the specialness of them. Either way, turn this one up LOUD and see them in a small club while you still can.
