Flight Attendant- “Paradise”
Flight Attendant have been on fire this past year releasing song after song I just can’t get enough of. Their latest, “Paradise”, dropped Friday and it’s continued this trend 100%. I’ve been a fan of this band since they began and watching them do exactly what they want to do musically and artistically is something to admire. The band is comprised of 5 members all from different musical backgrounds/styles and combined it equals a sound all it’s own, which often seems to be the case when bands like this come along and change the game for us all. I’ve often said it’s only a matter of time before other bands start ripping Flight Attendant off and I feel that day gets closer with every single they release. 2021 has found it’s band, and that band is Flight Attendant.
KennyHoopla w/ Travis Barker- “Hollywood Sucks”
KennyHoopla stayed strong in 2020 with amazing releases and visual elements to pass the time until he could hit the road again. He even joined me for an Instagram Live takeover last summer and just talking to him I could tell he was ready to get out there and do what he was MADE to do. Now with things finally looking up he’s got a tour with Machine Gun Kelly coming up this Fall and now another single featuring Travis Barker on the drums. “Hollywood Sucks” is a great testament to a dude who’s living in the moment and not taking himself too seriously, all the while killing it out there. Here’s to you KennyHoopla, we need more artists like you in this world.
Pete Yorn- “Rooftops”
One of my all time favorite records, “Music For The Morning After” turns 20 this year, and although it makes me feel old, seeing unreleased B-sides come out on re-issues makes the pain of aging sting just a little less. I saw Pete Yorn live so many times on this tour in small clubs and I’m forever thankful for that. I remember hearing “Rooftops” live at a couple of those shows but it never made the original release of MFTMA. It’s great to hear it now, recorded at a time when Pete Yorn had no idea how big he was about to become. A recording of a great song at a great place in time. Happy 20 years to an iconic record Pete, here’s to 20 more years and then 20 more after that.
Ghost Foot- “Calling It Off”
Ghost Foot are arguably one of the coolest bands around. I’ve always loved their raw live shows, honest recordings and lyrics, and just the overall take it or leave it attitude of the band. They’ve always had their own sound and vibe to them and they’ve never changed or chased any popular waves, which makes them real rock n roll to me. Their latest single, “Calling It Off”, lyrically hits as hard as the music does. Hearing the song stripped down in this rad video below that they recently released really showcases the strength of this band’s songwriting. It’s crazy to know this band is from Shreveport, LA. I remember having some wild partying nights in that town long ago on days off on the road, but I had no idea one of my favorite bands would someday come from there. Watch out 2021, Ghost Foot is about to remind us all that sometimes all you need to be is yourself and that’s more than enough to resonate with the masses.
Miracle Legion- “Wish You Were Here”
I have been absolutely loving all the releases Miracle Legion have been putting out via their bandcamp page this past year. I’ve loved this band as long as I can remember (I once spent $200 on a Miracle Legion CD on Ebay because there was no other way to get my hands on it), so it’s amazing to hear so many things from their extensive archives. “Maddington: The Lost Demos of ’88” is extra interesting to me because there are some early versions of some of my favorite songs of theirs on it. Songs like “With A Wish” and “So Good” long before they came out on their major label debut in the early 1990s. It’s the band before the “big break” if you will and I love hearing what they were up to around this time. My favorite track is a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here”. Its a really rad take on a song that we now call a classic but at the time they covered it was only about 13 years old. That’s like someone today covering a song from 2008, so Miracle Legion covered it in their own way long before it was considered a cover staple which means the boys were real fans of that song and you can feel it in this version. Click on the picture below to hear it via their bandcamp page.
