Eddie Vedder performed Sunday at the Global Citizen Mandela 100 festival, held in Johannesburg, South Africa to celebrate the centennial of Nelson Mandela‘s birth. During his set, the Pearl Jam frontman paid tribute to his late grunge contemporary, Chris Cornell.
Prior to playing the Pearl Jam song “Long Road,” which Vedder described as a “bit of a prayer,” he announced that the performance was dedicated to Mandela and “my brother, Chris.”
The nearly 10-hour festival also featured performances from Coldplay‘s Chris Martin, as well as Beyoncé, JAY-Z, Ed Sheeran and Pharrell Williams. During his performance, Vedder said that playing South Africa, which he had never done before, was a “dream come true.”
“It’s also a dream come true to open for Beyoncé and JAY-Z,” he added.
The festival streamed live online and is available to watch in its entirety now on YouTube.
