In the posh town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, the local council just turned the friendly, oddly satisfying sounds of pickleball into a criminal offense.
At the only public pickleball court in town, the snooty council voted to permanently ban the game after a few neighbors complained the “pop-pop-pop” of the paddle-ball racket was too loud. Now, playing pickleball there could get you slapped with a misdemeanor and a fine because apparently the sound of a bouncing plastic ball is also as criminal as ice cream cones and high heels (yeah, those were real ordinances too).
Local seniors and longtime players are now in a pickle thanks to a tiny group of complainers gets to wipe out an entire sport beloved by many instead of simply finding ways to mitigate the noise.
