This week, Stone Temple Pilots finally announced their new singer: former The X Factor contestant Jeff Gutt. Speaking with The Oakland Press, Gutt says “it’s a very strange feeling” being the frontman of a band he’s long admired.
“I’m blessed and very honored. It’s like joining the Led Zeppelin of my generation,” he says. “I feel like I’m living in a movie.”
Gutt adds that he’s long “studied” the style of STP’s original frontman, the late Scott Weiland.
“I was studying Scott when I was coming into singing myself, and I learned so much from [listening to] him,” Gutt says. “It was fun to incorporate all those things in my own way and still sing true to Scott’s stuff and really keep that as true as I could.”
The first taste of the Gutt-fronted Stone Temple Pilots came in the form of the new single “The Meadow,” which Gutt helped write on his first day with the band.
“It’s like they wrote through me and I wrote through them,” Gutt says. “It was a really great process.”
STP plan to release a new album in 2018, and they’re playing the Welcome to Rockville festival in Jacksonville, Florida in April.
