Ahhhh, Switzerland…The Alps, chocolate, cheese, those cool knives, oh, and heavy metal bands. And one of the most popular Swiss bands, Opeth, will be at The War Memorial Auditorium on May 4th.
Opeth was not only influenced by metal legends like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Judas Priest but also influenced by early progressive rock bands like Yes and Genesis. Those influences really show on their latest album “Sorceress”.
Also on stage May 4 at War Memorial, France’s, Gojira. As I learned from “Talladega Nights” (not school) France invented democracy, existentialism and the ménage a trois…now you can add Gojira to that list. Make that “Grammy nominated” Gojira after being up for best rock album (Magma) and best Metal performance for the song “Silvera”. Vocalist Joe Duplantier has also been involved in projects with Max Cavalera (Sepultura) and Apocalyptica. I saw Gojira open for Lamb Of God and Metallica at Bridgestone Arena back in 2009 and trust me, these dudes were every bit as loud and heavy as the other two. I can only imagine the havoc they will wreak at WMA.
How about a little Dagwood trivia? What was the first show Dagwood ever saw at War Memorial Auditorium? WASP in 1985!
